How to Migrate to version 5
Note: these instructions only apply to Policy Patrol installations of version 3 and earlier. If you are upgrading from version 4, you will be able to keep your existing configuration. Please read the upgrade guide for further instructions on how to complete the upgrade from version 4.
Tip: To have as little 'down time' as possible, you can first install Policy Patrol 5 on a test machine and migrate your configuration as described below (skip step 4 since you will leave your current Policy Patrol version running on the server until you complete your configuration). When you are ready, export your version 5 configuration by selecting File > Export configuration from the menu in the Policy Patrol Administration console. Then follow step 4 to uninstall the current Policy Patrol version from your server and install version 5. After installation, import your version 5 configuration by opening the Administration console and selecting File > Import configuration. Select your previously saved .ppe configuration file. Your entire configuration will now be imported including your rules, templates, filters, users and any user selections in the rules.
If you have Policy Patrol version 1: You must export your disclaimer template and uninstall version 1 before you install version 5. To uninstall version 1, go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove programs. Select Policy Patrol Disclaimers. Click Change/Remove. Select Remove and click Next. Click Yes to confirm that you wish to uninstall Policy Patrol. After removing the Policy Patrol program you will need to restart the IIS services. Click Yes to restart the services. When the wizard is ready, click Finish.
If you have Policy Patrol version 2 or 3, follow the next steps:
Step 1. Export your templates
- In Policy Patrol 3, go to Templates > <folder> and open the properties of the template.
- Click the Export button in the toolbar and save the template. If you have also entered text in the Plain or RTF/Plain tab, you must select this tab and click on the Export button again. Click Cancel.
- Repeat these steps for each template you wish to migrate to version 4.
Step 2. Export your filters
- In Policy Patrol 2/3, go to Filters > <folder> and open the properties of the filter.
- Click the Export button in the toolbar and save the filter. Click Cancel.
- Repeat these steps for each filter you wish to migrate to version 4.
Step 3. Copy your rule descriptions
- In Policy Patrol 2/3, go to Rules > <folder>.
- Select the rule you wish to migrate.
- In the Rule description pane, select the text, right-click and select Copy. Now Paste it into a text document.
- Repeat this step for every rule.
- Save the text document so that you can recreate the rules in version 4. If you would also like to recreate the same rule names, you can make a screenshot of the rule list in Policy Patrol.
Step 4. Uninstall Policy Patrol 2/3
Make a copy of your C:\PolicyPatrolData directory. Now uninstall Policy Patrol 3 by going to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs. Select Policy Patrol in the list and click Remove. When the uninstall program asks you whether you wish to remove your configuration, select Yes. The IIS service will be restarted by the Policy Patrol uninstallation. If you have Kaspersky Anti-virus installed, select this program from the Add/Remove Programs list and click Remove. In version 4, Kaspersky is installed with the Policy Patrol program so there is no need to install Kaspersky Anti-Virus separately.
